Notes: The first castle was built by King Béla IV (1234-1270) after the Tatar invasion. It became a royal seat during the rein of Sigimund (1387-1437). It was mostly destroyed during the battle in which Hungarians defeated the Turks in 1686. Since 1873, when Óbuda, Buda and Pest were unified, the castle has had an important cultural role. Today, it houses the National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, the Modern Historical Museum and the National Library.
